Jefferson Market Library
The Jefferson Market Library, at Sixth Ave. and W. 10th St., was built as a courthouse in 1876. The photo above shows a scene from its courthouse days. By 1945, the building was vacant. In 1961, the Committee for a Library in Jefferson Market Courthouse was formed, leading to the building’s eventual renovation. Last year, the library celebrated its 50th anniversary.
