A reported 2,500 hardy souls took the Polar Bear Plunge at Coney Island on New Year’s Day. The water was 41 degrees, which was actually slightly warmer than the temperature on the beach. The Polar Bear Club of Coney Island has held winter swims since 1903. Photos by Milo Hess
