Transit Sam, week of Dec. 11, 2013

Wed., Dec. 11 – Tues., Dec. 17
ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING IS IN EFFECT ALL WEEK

Frigid temperatures pose hazards for pedestrians and drivers alike. Pedestrians will be darting across streets to get where they are going faster; not all of them make it. Very high on the crash list is Canal St., especially for those crashes involving trucks and pedestrians. Remember Transit Sam’s rule, “Do not cross in front of a truck until you see the whites of the trucker’s eyes!”

Friday will be a Gridlock Alert Day, which means roads all over the city will be jammed, especially Canal St. near the Manhattan Bridge and Holland Tunnel. Take transit if possible.

The Giants take on the Seahawks 1 p.m. Sunday at MetLife Stadium. That’ll make for slowdowns before and after the game in the Lincoln Tunnel, and sending more drivers down to the Holland.

All Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge will close 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights. That means diversions to the Battery Tunnel (no more weekend-long tube closures!) and the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges.

In the Holland Tunnel, one of two inbound lanes will close 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights. That means slowdowns back in New Jersey and again once drivers exit the tunnel near Canal St.

On West St./Route 9A, one lane will close in both directions between West Thames and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. One southbound lane will close between Murray and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Nearby, one eastbound lane of Vesey St. will close between North End Ave. and Route 9A/West St. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Washington St. will close intermittently between Laight and Hubert Sts. between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily through Monday. At the end of each workday, one lane will reopen.

Nassau St. will close periodically between Ann and Beekman Sts. through the end of the year.
