From the mailbag:

Dear Transit Sam,

I’m a tour guide who steps on many charter buses for tours. When we head to up to Midtown, I want to take the FDR, since it is usually faster than other routes and offers a couple of dramatic views.

At Old Slip, a sign at the entrance to the F.D.R. states “No Commercial Traffic” and there is a picture of a truck with a slash through it. Does a charter bus count as commercial?

Jared, Alphabet City

Dear Jared,

Not exactly. Charter buses must follow truck routes, except for when local routes are needed to reach a specific destination. A city DOT map of bus routes in Lower Manhattan shows that charter buses are indeed prohibited from the FDR: https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/lower_manhattan_tour_bus_map.pdf.
