C.B. 1 seeks rep. for 9/11 health panel

Community Board 1 has nominated Catherine McVay Hughes, the board’s vice chairperson, as one of two representatives of certified-eligible World Trade Center survivors on the W.T.C. Health Program Science and Technical Advisory Committee.

The committee, which makes decisions related to the health portion of the Zadroga Act, will advise Victim Compensation Fund Special Master Sheila Birnbaum on the addition of cancers and other medical conditions to the V.C.F. regulations.

McVay Hughes has ample experience in World Trade Center-related environmental health issues — from serving on the Community Advisory Board for the W.T.C. Health Registry and the Environmental Health Center to testifying at numerous city, state and federal hearings on W.T.C.-related issues.

“It is important that a resident that has lived and still lives in the W.T.C. vicinity is appointed,” McVay Hughes wrote in an April 27 Talking Point featured in the Downtown Express. “No amount of research can substitute for firsthand experience.”
