An honorary street co-naming sign was added at Hudson and Christopher Sts. in Greenwich Village last Thursday for Sylvia Rivera, the late transgender activist. Rivera, who was at the Stonewall Inn in 1969, during the riots that paved the way for the modern gay civil rights movement, is an important figure in gay history. She co-founded S.T.A.R. House, one of the first attempts to create housing for homeless transgender people in New York City in the early 1970s. She lived the last five years of her life at Transy House in Brooklyn, which was inspired by S.T.A.R. House. She told The Villager that she lived for a period of time on the piers on the Greenwich Village waterfront.
