Abortion rights advocates to march over bridge

Days before the Replication National Convention, thousands of New Yorkers will march across the Brooklyn Bridge to support reproductive rights such as safe and legal abortion, sex education, and the right to privacy regarding sexuality.

Representatives from the event’s 16 sponsors — reproductive and women’s rights groups and gay and lesbian organizations — expect tens of thousands of New Yorkers to participate in the March for Women’s Lives New York, to be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004. The event will begin at Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza and culminate in a three-hour rally at City Hall Park featuring celebrity and city official speakers.

Rally speakers will include state controller Alan Hevesi, actor Kathleen Turner and Eve Ensler, playwright of “The Vagina Monologues”. Other city and state officials unable to attend the event, such as Senator Hillary Clinton, will send written statements, Carr said. “Overall we have a nice lineup of elected officials, heads of organizations, and teen advocates talking about the reality of what goes on for young people in this country,” she said.

In addition to NARAL, other event sponsors include Downtown’s Lesbian, Gay Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, Planned Parenthood of New York City and the New York Civil Liberties Union. Participants will convene at 11 a.m. in Cadman Plaza for the march, which will begin at noon. The rally at City Hall Park will run from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
