Ruled homicide

The Medical Examiner’s office said last week that that Brian Jordan, whose naked and partly decomposed body was found at the end of last year in his West Village apartment, was a murder victim. Jordan’s landlord found the body under the bed in the apartment at 641 Hudson St. on Dec. 27. The Medical Examiner’s office ruled on Feb. 4 that Jordan died of asphyxia, possibly during sex.

Slash conviction

Edwin Santiago, 31, was convicted on Feb. 6 of slashing Yael Leopold, a 22-year-old Amherst College senior in January 2003, while she was waiting for a train at the Chambers St. subway station after having been out clubbing in the East Village. The victim, who was visiting friends in the city, was slashed about the head and hand, requiring 70 stitches in her scalp and reconstructive surgery on her thumb. The defendant’s lawyer, Seth D. Gross, contends Santiago was mistakenly identified and plans an appeal.

Soho robbery

Three women were arrested for third-degree robbery and possession of stolen property at 6:49 p.m. Sun. Feb. 8 in connection with a shoplifting incident at a boutique on Broadway between Spring and Prince Sts., police said. The suspects, Ralene Caton, 30, Rachael Caton, 23, and Latoya Holt, 24, struggled with a security guard before they were arrested two blocks away from the shop, police said.

Bridge jumper

The body of an East Village man last seen walking the suspension cable of the Brooklyn Bridge before noon on Thurs. Feb. 5, was taken from the East River by Harbor Patrol police. Phillip Hutchinson, 56, of 733 E. Fifth St., was pronounced dead at 12:20 p.m. at NYU Downtown Hospital, police said.

East Village DOA

Police found Carlo Manfredi, 64, dead in his apartment at 216 E. Sixth St. at 11:15 a.m. Wed. Feb. 4. There was no sign of trauma and the Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death.

E. 13th main break

A 12-inch water main on E. 13th St. between Second and Third Aves. broke on the morning of Sun. Feb. 8 disrupting traffic and shutting off water on the block. The break at about 6 a.m. interrupted water service to the mostly residential north side of the block.
