‘For years I’ve sent stories to The Villager. There’s a lot of competition between The Villager and The Times for stories. You pitch the stories to several sources and you never know who’s going to pick it up. There were a lot of Downtown papers — Downtown, Manhattan Mirror, East Village Eye, East Village Other, even Newsday — really what we have left, the one that kept going, is The Villager. What people don’t understand is the power and the potential of The Villager. The developers, the top guys, have to be reading it. Gregg Singer, Julian Schnabel and the president of N.Y.U. have to read it. The Villager is a good community paper and it’s a serious community paper — a serious New York paper, not just community.’
