Bikes for Africa

Karen Overton, director of Recycle a Bike, right, and Christine Datz-Romero of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, collected working and nonworking bikes at a community drop-off point in Sara Delano Roosevelt Park last Saturday to be sent to Ghana. They also collected spare parts, such as seats, wheels and tires. Afterwards, the bikes were added to a container in a parking lot at Norfolk and Delancey Sts. that held bikes that had already been donated, which was to be sent to the airport and flown to the African nation. The hope is the bikes will offer Ghanaians better transportation options and better access to their farms, markets, jobs, education and healthcare.
